i have started down the long road of graduate school. i have had my two first classes with two huge greats in the graphic design field. My first class was with milton glaser on wednesday. he is a legendary designer and educator. (he designed the i love NY logo.) the class was stressful, but amazing. he makes you think and defend your work and your actions. philosopy, options and knowledge based on 42 years of experience as an illustrator and a designer flows out of him infusing the classroom with ideas. oh, and he was wearing a cowboy hat when he walked in.

my second class was yesterday with stefan sagmeister. he is a complete 180° from what i expected. stefan is a tall, gangley man in his 40s with the aura of a enthusastic 12 year old. his approach to design seems more emotionally driven. he wants design to touch others. he shared advice, stories and insights with us. it was amazing. my favorite memory was him disecting the design a coffee cup that he gotten at the corner store.

the people that are in my program year are amazing. my seat is surrounded by three women that i feel closely attached to even though i've know them for less than a week. natalie sits next me. she used to do book design for random house and just got married. she loves romance books and is sweet/strong. across the cube wall is araba. she got her degree in english and biology. she has done some undergraduate design studies at parsons and likes to drink guinness like me. to my right sits lauren. she got her degree in english and is mega intelligent. she likes reggae and we have already bonded over ska. last night we went to get drinks and i met her husband who is going to NYU to get his law degree. i also met her friend john who just published a book. good conversations under the new york skyline.

okay. time to work on milton's homework. i have to redesign a food package. hmmmm…i thought i got away from this. ;)
